Cross Research Professor Program
The highest research honor that a faculty
member may receive from the University of Oklahoma is to be
elevated to the rank of George Lynn Cross (GLC) Research Professor.
In addition to the intangible honor of this position, the appointment
includes a sizable award, a permanent salary increase, and special
research assistance. The University confers this title only
on those whose contributions through research or creative activity
to the advancement of their special academic fields have been
of sufficient quality and magnitude to have received national
and international favorable recognition over a period of years.
Currently there are 21 GLC Research Professors on the Norman
Campus.
Each year the Provost requests nominations for the position
of GLC Research Professor from the various departments. Evidence
of the accomplishments of the nominee, such as books, published
papers and other creative works, must be submitted. The nominee's
reputation as a research scholar must be substantiated by written
statements from recognized authorities in the nominee's field
of research employed at other universities. After all data are
accumulated, the Research Council working with the Vice President
for Research (VPR), has the responsibility of summarizing the
evaluations of the qualifications of all nominees and deciding
who should be recommended to the President and to the Board
of Regents for the Research Professorship.
The VPR provides the funds for the special research assistance.
This year each George Lynn Cross Research Professor received
$6,000.
