Internal Funding Opportunities

Proposals received without all of the items listed below, will be returned without review.

1. COMPLETE THE APPLICATION COVER SHEET

2. SUBMIT A PROPOSAL NARRATIVE (not to exceed 5 double-spaced typewritten pages, excluding appendices; for proposals of $1000 or less, not to exceed 2 double-spaced typed pages.) The proposal will be evaluated by a diverse group of faculty, most of whom will have no background in your field. Therefore, please submit a clearly written proposal and keep jargon and acronyms at a minimum. Your narrative should include the following items:

a. A statement of the basic purpose or goal of this research project and its primary objectives. Indicate how this project fits into your overall scholarly program.

b. An explanation of your project plan and an overview of your research procedures, supplemented with references to support the proposal and assist the referees. c. A description of the results you expect the project to yield, their significance to your scholarly program and to your discipline and details concerning how you intend to disseminate them (e.g. publications, presentations).

d. For the PI Research Investment Program, if funds are being requested to strengthen a proposal that has been previously
submitted to an external funding agency, then copies of the critiques must be provided.

NOTE: As a general rule funding will be provided to perform the research/creative activity and not for its presentation and/or publication.

Proposals which have been rewritten may be submitted for reconsideration without prejudice one time each fiscal year.

3. SUBMIT A LINE ITEM BUDGET. If you expect to receive additional support from another source, list each source and the amount of funds anticipated from each source. (Budget should not exceed $6,000 for over $1,000 requests and $10,000 for the PI research investment program.)

A clear justification of the budget must be included in each proposal. When requesting funds for personnel assistance, a compelling justification should be given including specific tasks to be performed, the qualifications of the individual(s) to be supported and why such assistance could not be supported through other sources. Appropriate documentation of costs (e.g., price quotations) will greatly enhance the review process. Requests for support for the purchase of computing equipment, hardware and software must be adequately justified as essential for the performance of the work proposed.

Travel support will be for research purposes only. These can include faculty development in research areas. Travel to professional meetings may not be included. Grants for travel will normally be for the cost of transportation plus total per diem of no more than TEN days. Per diem beyond 10 days will be considered only in exceptional cases, but must be justified.

4. INCLUDE A SHORT RESEARCH VITA AND OTHER INFORMATION. It is important to attach an up-to-date short research vita (limited to 2 pages) and publication list to the proposal. For requests over $1000 include a complete funding history for the past five years, including successful and unsuccessful efforts to obtain external funding. If you have received support from the Office of the Vice President for Research and/or Research Council within the past three years, include a short paragraph on each award which includes the funding amount and the benefits of the funds to your research/creative activity program.

5. OTHER POSSIBLE REVIEWS. If the project will involve human subjects, laboratory animals, rDNA and/or radioactive materials or biohazards, you must also provide information that the appropriate University Committee has reviewed and approved the project materials. The appropriate committees are: Human Subjects-Institutional Review Board; Laboratory Animals-Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and Radioactive Materials-Radiation Safety Committee and the Biosafety Committee.

PLEASE SUBMIT THE ORIGINAL AND 17 COPIES OF THE COMPLETED APPLICATION AND ALL ATTACHMENTS TO THE OFFICE OF RESEARCH SERVICES, ROBERTSON HALL, ROOM 134, BY THE 1ST DAY OF THE MONTH IN WHICH YOU WISH THE REQUEST CONSIDERED. FOR REQUESTS OF $1000 OR LESS, ONLY THE ORIGINAL AND 1 COPY ARE NECESSARY AND PROPOSALS ARE REVIEWED WHEN THEY ARE RECEIVED. OMISSION OF ANY ITEM MAY DELAY REVIEW OF THE APPLICATION.
