GIFT


Unrestricted monies or property given the University with no expectations of something in return (deliverables).

A legally binding agreement between a sponsor to award funds to support a proposed activity/project and the grantee institution to accept and use those funds for the activities proposed. A grant (as opposed to a cooperative agreement) is to be used when no substantial involvement is anticipated between sponsor and recipient during performance of the activity. Usually, the project is conceived by the investigator and submitted as a proposal. The investigator defines the details and retains scientific freedom. The sponsor supports or assists. Fundamental research, applied research, institutional research and training, and support for resources and facilities projects are typically supported. Types of grants include:

Conference Grant – Assistance for support of the costs of a symposium, seminar, or workshop where persons meet to exchange information and views or explore or clarify a defined subject, problem, or area of knowledge within the areas of the sponsor's interests.

Consortium Grant – A grant to one institution for support of one well-defined collaborative project in which other educational institutions, industry, private, and/or sponsors participate.

Construction Grant – Assistance to support new buildings or renovation of existing facilities.

Demonstration Grant – Assistance, generally provided for a limited period of time, to establish or demonstrate the feasibility of a theory or approach.

Discretionary Grant – Assistance for a project in which the sponsor participates in selecting the project, the grantee, and the amount of the award.

Equipment Grant – Assistance specifically to fund the purchase of research equipment. Proposals generally require matching funds.

Facilities Assistance Grant – Money for acquisition, remodeling, expansion, or leasing of existing facilities; or the construction of new facilities, and/or for the initial equipping of such facilities.

Fellowship Award – Assistance to or in behalf of an individual to support further studies/training which will enhance that individual's level of competence and research.

Planning Grant – Assistance in support of planning, developing, designing, and establishing a project/activity.

Research Grant – Assistance to support investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories in the light of new facts or the application of such new or revised theories. Such grants may support a discrete research project, a center, a consortium arrangement, or other types of projects.

Research (Career/Scientist) Development Award – Assistance to an institution to allow for the development and/or continuation of research careers of specified individuals.

Resource Grant – Assistance provided to develop or support a service or activity which is then made available for use by others, such as support of a computer center.

Service Grant – Assistance to support the organization, establishment, provision, or expansion of the delivery of services to a specified community or area.

Training Grant – Assistance to an organization to support the training of students, personnel, or prospective employees in research or in the techniques or practices relevant to the delivery of health, education, science, or technical services in a particular area of concern.

GRANTEE

 

 

The institution or individual to which a grant (or cooperative agreement) is awarded and which is responsible and accountable both for the use of the funds provided and for the performance of the grant-supported project or activity.

GRANTS MANAGEMENT OFFICER (GMO)

 

 

 



The agency official responsible for the business management aspects of the particular grants or cooperative agreements. The GMO serves as the counterpart to the research administrator. In this capacity, the GMO is responsible for all business management matters associated with the review, negotiation, award, and administration of grants and interprets grants administration policies and provisions. He or she works closely with the program or project officer who is responsible for the scientific, technical, and programmatic aspects of the grant.
