Some
Lessons Learned from the 2008 Competition
- Proposals
not funded previously are eligible for resubmission. Consideration
should be given to doing so with attention to comments provided
from the review process.
- Clearly
articulate goals and outputs - which are different from those
of Federal grants.
- The
research and business components should be interwoven throughout
the proposal.
- The
actual business plan should be conspicuous and clearly explained.
- Clearly
articulate the "end game" and "exit strategy"
as appropriate.
- Be
bold and imaginative, keeping in mind the goals of EDGE and
the backgrounds of those reviewing and making the decisions.
- Recognize
that multiple options exist for the budget, e.g., grant, contract,
loan, etc, and thus do not constrain thinking to conventional
mechanisms used for research grants. See the EDGE web site
for details.
- Assess
and articulate the various dimensions of risk and explain
mitigation strategies. Questionable or weakly supported outcomes
reduce the likelihood of being funded.
- Oral
presentations are vital - must clearly articulate research
and business dimensions and how they link together and are
mutually supportive.
